On Thursday, July 27, 2017, Southport Police Officer Lt. Aaron Allan was shot and killed in the line of duty. He took an oath to “Protect and Serve” and laid down his life while in the performance of his duty, a duty that Officer Allan did every day for the past twenty years to the fullest.
In the days that followed this horrific tragedy, the entire city of Southport came together as one. Residents as well as business owners within the city and surrounding areas wanted to give back to Lt. Allan and the members of the Southport Police Department.
On the day of Lt. Allan’s funeral, thousands of law enforcement agencies throughout the country came to pay their respects to their fallen brother. People lined the procession route, some waving American flags, some with personal messages, and one that simply said “Thank You.”
Businesses donated food and water and their time. The public outpouring was heartwarming and greatly appreciated.
As Chief of the Southport Police Department, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you:
Thank you to our Honorable Mayor Russell McClure for his steadfast leadership during the darkest of days.
Thank you to every member of the Southport Police Department and their families for their dedication and devotion and for keeping the city of Southport safe day after day, night after night.
Thank you to all law enforcement agencies for coming out to march with us and pay their respects.
Thank you to every man, woman and child as well as members of the business community who sent cards, food, prayers and took the time to mourn with us the loss of this great Police Officer.
Thank you to the members of the media for the respect and courtesy that they displayed while covering this tragic event.
Most of all I want to thank Lt. Aaron Allan for his bravery, dedication and friendship. Officer Aaron Allan did not have to die in the line of duty to gain the title “hero.” In our hearts Aaron was a “hero” every day of his life.
